Telework

Telework is generally considered a voluntary work arrangement that allows employees to work at home, or other approved alternate worksite, during normal business hours. Teleworking is an effective business tool, provides greater flexibility and lower stress for employees, and helps to improve the environment by reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. The advantages of teleworking make it a win-win-win situation for all concerned.*

If there is not one, suggest starting a pilot and identify a few employees who are interested. Studies have shown that only 30-40% of employees are interested in teleworking and believe that parts of their job are suitable for remote work. This toolkit, created by the County of San Mateo, has a detailed step-by-step plan you can follow to set up a pilot program.

Employees will need a computer and Internet access at a minimum. The above mentioned toolkit has a detailed step-by-step plan you can follow to set up a pilot program. It includes options to research for technology, details on how businesses benefit from employees teleworking, case studies to review, and information about policies to consider.

Remember, it does not have to be a fulltime telework schedule. Employees can work just one day off site, or two or three, and still get the benefits in work/life balance, cost savings and reduced traffic congestion and emissions.
