SMART Train

There is a train in the North Bay! You are now able to travel by rail to destinations between the Sonoma County Airport station and downtown San Rafael. In late 2018 the train will connect to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal.

1. Find your route

Decide which stations you are traveling to and from. Consider how you will arrive and depart from the SMART stations. Decide if it makes most sense for you to walk, ride a bike, take a bus, get dropped off, or drive. Connecting information for all those modes are listed with the stations. Or Google Maps can help you find your connections. You should also check with your employer in case they have shuttle or carpool options.

2. Understand the fares

Youth, seniors, and the disabled can ride for half price. Discounted monthly and annual passes are also available. SMART has zone-based fares; meaning that the further you travel, the more you’ll have to pay, which is why it’s important to check the benefits of different passes that SMART offers so that you make the most cost-effective choice. When you take a bus to or from the train, you will get a $1.50 transfer credit on Clipper for the second leg of your trip!

Your employer may also be able to help out with an Eco-Pass or pre-tax commuter benefits. Check with your HR department.

3. Get a clipper card

SMART will only take the Clipper Card to cover your fare. You can get a regular adult card immediately at certain retail outlets or order online for delivery in the mail. If you need a Youth or Senior discount card plan ahead and apply through the mail or you may go to your local transit office. Once you have the card you can add funds to it online or at any of the designated retail locations. Jump on the train, without any cash, but remember to tag on and tag off with the Clipper Card so that you don’t get charged for the maximum zone fare.

The Emergency Ride Home program takes the worry out of using transit to commute to work or school by reimbursing rides home in cases of a qualifying emergencies.
